Nicole Barnes: Park Nicollet Foundation - Growing Through Grief

Nicole Barnes has twenty-three years of experience as a social worker, the last three with Growing Through Grief (GTG). GTG has partnered with EP Schools for four years supporting kids who have lost family members or friends. EP is one of thirteen districts supported by GTG. Support in provided through support groups, one on one counseling or crisis response. Eighty-five percent of students served are in middle and high school and remaining fifteen percent are elementary students. One in fourteen students will lose a parent or sibling by age eighteen. GTG is there to help teachers who are not trained to help grieving students.

In 2018-2019 GTG helped thirty-four students per week in five groups. There was an average of 35 individual sessions per month and 1,000 hours of service. Grief without counseling results in withdrawal, difficulty concentrating and absenteeism.

Check out their web site at https://www.parknicollet.com/healthandwellnessinformation/growing-through-grief for examples and stories of assistance provided by GTG and how the public can help advance their mission.
