Speaker Jim Brimeyer: Global Synergy Group
 After twenty years in public sector management, Jim Brimeyer began his career in executive search in July, 1988. In January 1992 he established The Brimeyer Group, Inc., an executive search firm serving cities, counties, non-profit organizations, semi-public agencies and private sector companies. Mr. Brimeyer has conducted over 500 executive searches with the company, establishing the firm as a premiere innovator in the business.Previously, Jim served four cities: three as a City Manager including his last position as City Manager of St. Louis Park, Minnesota (population 45,000). Jim has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Northern Illinois University and a B.A. Degree from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. Jim is a member of the International City Management Association, the Minnesota City Management Association, and the Minnesota Municipal Utilities Association. He is active in the community serving the TwinWest Chamber of Commerce and as a Past President of the St. Louis Park Rotary Club and the St. Louis Park Rotary Foundation. Announcements and Reminders:

 BUY IT FORWARD by Brian BaldwinA former investment banker, Brian Baldwin has developed a new on-line, non-profit marketplace that helps match donors with buyers of things the donor wishes to sell, and the proceeds of the sale go to the charity of the donor’s choice. Named, “Buy It Forward”, the mission of the organization is to make it easier to give, and possible to give more, to help great causes by turning “stuff” into cash.
Buy It Forward is free to the non-profit entities that are designated as beneficiaries. People can also chose to “tip” or round up their contributions by adding cash to the amount gained through the sale of an item or items. Buy It Forward provides the marketplace for donors and buyers, collects payment, and pays the non-profit. The buyer and seller arrange for the transfer of the item themselves. The buyer and seller each receive an e-receipt from the transaction, and the seller (donor) receives a tax credit. Buy It Forward screens out items for sale that are lewd, illegal, or otherwise inappropriate for sale.

Buy It Forward represents a new method for people to support the non-profit causes of their choice, even if they are not able to give sums of money. Rather than holding a garage sale, in which neighbors often exchange items they don’t really need, this new platform matches items for sale with those who are truly seeking them, and assisting non-profits in the process. Currently, approximately 3% of the nation’s population are regular charitable “givers”. Through innovative venues like Buy It Forward, many more may be able to support worthy cause of their choice.

- Vino Classiso was within $500 of our sponsorship goal, and met it during our meeting with spontaneous sponsorship commitments! Great job, EP AM Rotary Members!! Tickets are out—please sell your event and raffle tickets to make this our most successful Vino Classico event ever. All members are asked to contribute a bottle of wine for our Wall of Wine raffle. Please bring a bottle valued at between $15 and $20 to a meeting prior to the October 10th event, or contribute money and Elaine Larabee with shop for you. Coupons for 10% off your wine purchase at Eden Prairie liquor stores are available for Rotary members and were passed out at the meeting. Questions? - Our Meals on Wheels week is September 14-18.
- STRIVE held its orientation meeting for mentors last week. We have 47 student mentees for this school year—our largest number ever! The program is still in need of 2 female and 2 male mentors. Please consider whether you or someone you know could be a valued mentor and influence in a young person’s life by participating in the STRIVE program. Questions? Please contact Jay Simpson.
- The District meeting at the Arboretum is September 25th. If you would like to attend, the deadline for sign up is September 15th. Please register on-line through the Rotary website.
- EP AM Rotary Board Meeting is September 15th at 8:30.
- Dave Anderson is organizing an upcoming Mystery Night event. Possible dates are September 23, 24 and October 3rd. Please let Dave know if you (and your spouse or significant other) are interested in attending and which date(s) work best for you.
- Our new Rotary Exchange Student, Art, has had some great experiences with Rotarians in his first couple of weeks in Minnesota. Josh Swanson took him flying, Brad and Bev Aho took Art for a walk around the lakes, Jeanne Zetah took him to the Science Museum and Arboretum, Yvonne Selcer and husband Chuck took Art to the MN Zoo, Jan and Nick Eian hosted Art for dinner. Please take some time to get to know Art by inviting him to join you and your family at an outing, or for a family dinner. Current host family, Dan O’Brien, needs someone to host Art for a week beginning October 11 when Dan and his wife will be out of the country. Conatct Dan to schedule time with Art.

SPOTLIGHT ON Dick Ward
Dick grew up in Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 7 th grade he was the tallest center on the basketball team, having reached his full height by that age. Flash forward to high s  chool, and Dick was one of the shortest guards on the team, but it was a good run! Dick’s father was head of engineering for the natural gas company. Dick attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha for his freshman year of college, then transferred to Dana College to complete his degree. Unfortunately, that college closed a few years ago. While in school, he studied business and accounting, but he learned while looking for his first job out of college that sales paid more than accounting, so he took a sales job with General Growth Properties. Dick and his wife, Martha, both worked for General Growth for many years. When the company moved its headquarters to Chicago, Dick left and started his own firm, Equity Property Group. Dick’s wife, Martha, is an executive at an advertising agency in downtown Minneapolis. They have two daughters, Cass and Ellen, and both have recently become engaged. Dick is anxiously anticipating two weddings next summer! For the past ten years, Dick has been heavily involved with volunteering with local organizations, holding roles on the board of the EP Chamber of Commerce, the EP Community Foundation and PROP. He enjoys giving back to the community where he and Martha have raised their family, and that is why he also enjoys being a member of Rotary.
HAPPY FINES
- Jeanne reminded Rotarians that the EPCF Brewfest is on Saturday, September 12th. She has tickets for sale ($35 each) as does Bev Aho and Mark Weber. Enjoy some great craft beer, burgers courtesy of Culver’s, and support the EP Community Foundation.
- Dan O’Brien shared that his daughter, Bridget, threw out the first pitch at his son-in-law’s recent baseball game, where the theme was “Pregnancy Night.” Bridget is 8 ½ months along with the soon-to-be most recent O’Brien grandchild.
- Elaine enjoyed a trip to Boston with husband, Kevin, to celebrate a professional accomplishment for Kevin and his team. Son, Joey, stayed home alone—but house was still standing upon their return.
- Pei Ling and husband are cleaning out their house and trying to reduce their “stuff”—perhaps good candidates for our speaker’s new venture “Buy It Forward”? Her oldest daughter also began her first day of preschool, complete with uniform which Pei Ling hopes will forestall wardrobe battles in the morning.
- The Ahos visited their daughter, Annie, and her husband in Washington state over the Labor Day weekend.
